car accidents are caused by human error. And while it’s only natural to make mistakes
in everyday life, making a mistake behind the wheel of a car can mean
losing your life. Below we’ve listed some of the top preventable
errors that cause
Distracted Driving. The number one cause behind car accidents is distracted driving. This
includes talking on your cell phone, eating lunch or fiddling with an iPod.
Tailgating. Tailgating is rampant along the I-35 corridor. At high speeds
you should be at least three seconds behind the car in front of you. A
general rule of thumb is one car length for every 10 mph.
Intoxicated Driving. This one should be obvious, but any amount of alcohol
will impair your ability to react to dangerous situations on the road.
Unsafe Lane Changes. Whenever you’re changing lanes, make sure you
check your blind spots. While your mirrors are handy tools for keeping
tabs on the traffic behind you, they can’t replace a quick glance behind.
Drowsy Driving. Lots of people don’t think about this late at night,
but drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as
drunk driving. If you’ve had a long day and find yourself nodding off behind the
wheel, pull over and wake yourself up before continuing.
Improper Turns. Turning out of a non-turn lane is not only unsafe—it’s
illegal. It’s better to turn around somewhere down the road than
make an illegal turn that could cause an accident.
Running Stop Signs and Red Lights. Running a red light is almost never
worth it. You could end up with a ticket, or worse, another car crunched
into your passenger door. Running a red not only endangers your life,
but the lives of other drivers too.
Driving the Wrong Way. Turning down a one-way street can be pretty easy
to do in an urban setting like Austin. When driving in the city, use extra
caution to make sure you aren’t going the wrong way.
