Earlier this July, a young man was pulled over by the police in Murfreesboro,
Tennessee at a DUI checkpoint. Consequently, he was bullied by police
officers, his rights were violated, and his car was damaged by a police
dog. Luckily, the young man recorded the encounter for the world to see
and noted how ironic it was that it took place at a 4th of July DUI checkpoint
– here’s an excerpt from the video:
Tennessee State Trooper AJ Ross orders me to pull over and get out of my
car, bullies me around, gets the drug sniffing K-9, lies about me having
“Illegal Drugs” in the car, searches without consent, and
tells me that it is ok to take away my freedom. All while not being detained.
All this harassment because my window was not lowered enough to his preference.
I broke no laws whatsoever. All of this on a day that we are supposed
to be celebrating freedom and liberty. This checkpoint was in Murfreesboro, TN.
The video is, in a word, simply infuriating. It is more than disappointing
for any American to watch a fellow citizen violated by the very uniform
that is supposed to be serving and protecting him. The young man repeatedly
exercised his Constitutional rights to not be illegally searched. He obeyed
the law to the dot – the same cannot be said of the officers he
encountered. The police officers seemed to be using the sobriety checkpoint
to fulfill their arrest quotas for unrelated violations – they actually
didn’t even mention drinking or alcohol a single time in the recorded
Sobriety Checkpoints by Texas Police?
Luckily, the State of Texas has long since prohibited sobriety checkpoints
– according to the Texas interpretation of the United States Constitution,
sobriety checkpoints should be illegal. Nevertheless, the shocking YouTube
video, which racked up millions of views within a week, serves every American
– Texan or otherwise – as a valuable educational resource
on how to deal with police encounters.

In reality, most people are not as aware of their rights as the young man
in this viral video seems to be. Most police officers are good people
fulfilling an important role in society, but many officers would not hesitate
violate your rights and take advantage of your ignorance. Just listen
to the disappointment of the Tennessee officer observing that the young
man “is perfectly innocent and he knows his rights.”
