Common Distractions While Driving

Every year many people get into car accidents that involve a distracted driver. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2011 around 387,000 people were injured and almost 3,500 killed in accidents caused by a distracted driver. Many seemingly innocent actions performed while driving a car can distract a driver and increase their chances of getting into an accident. Let's look at the most common activities that cause distraction while driving. Avoid these activities as much as possible while behind the steering wheel to decrease your chances of getting into an accident.

Texting and Driving

Texting is one of the most dangerous activities you can perform while driving. At least five seconds of attention time is taken away by your phone when texting and driving, which comes to about 120 yards of road that you completely miss.

Texting while driving is banned in 41 states in the U.S., though it is not banned by law in Texas, Austin however has banned texting while driving within the city. A texting while driving violation in Austin is a Class C misdemeanor that can be punished with a fine of up to $500.

Talking on a Cell Phone While Driving

While talking on a phone while driving is not nearly as distracting as texting, it still significantly increases your chances of getting a car accident. Dialing is the most distracting part of calling someone when driving. But even hands-free calling will increase your accident risk. Currently the use of handheld devices behind the wheel is banned in 10 states.

Eating and Drinking

Eating and drinking while driving greatly increases your chances of getting into an accident. It's best to leave your coffee for when you're at work and leave the burgers in their wrapping until you get home.
