Avoiding a Car Crash: How to Maintain a Safe Following Distance

Tailgating other cars is a very dangerous habit that could get you and other drivers into a car crash. Such a car crash can not only cause injuries to yourself and/or other involved people, in Texas if you rear-end a car, you will almost certainly be held responsible for the accident for not keeping a safe distance and speed with regards to other vehicles. Maintaining a safe distance and speed is not always that easy though, especially in bad weather conditions. Here are a few tips to keep in mind that can help you avoid getting into an accident.

The Three-Second Rule

Generally to keep a safe distance from other cars in traffic you need to follow the "three-second rule". To follow this rule, look at a fixed object in the distant and start counting seconds once the vehicle in front of you passes the object. If you make it to three seconds when you pass the object, you're keeping a safe distance between the vehicle in front of you that will allow you to timely respond to anything that happens to the cars in front of you.

Adjust According to Driving Conditions

If you are driving in bad weather conditions, heavy traffic, or at night when there is less visibility, adapt your driving behavior to these conditions. At least double the three-second rule and keep at least six seconds distance.

If conditions are really bad, for example when there's snow on the road or you're driving in a snow storm, go to nine seconds, or preferably try to stay off the road completely if possible. If you don't feel comfortable driving in the weather conditions that you are in, try to stop somewhere and wait it out.

Getting rear-ended by a tailgating driver can cause serious injury. If you or your loved ones have been involved in a car accident involving a tailgating driver, make sure to hire an experienced attorney who can help you get compensated for any sustained injuries.
