Bicycle Accident Prevention Starts With Car Drivers

It's a sad story that you read about all too often; another bicyclist is struck and injured, sometimes even killed, by a motor vehicle. While it is understandable that accidents happen, it is often seen that drivers behind the wheel become too casual and negligent of sharing the road with their two-wheeled friends. It is important for motor vehicle operators to take the right precautions when commuting so that everyone can be safe on the road.

One of the most common causes for a bicycle accident is a motor vehicle not looking twice for them. Whether it's when changing a lane or pulling out onto a road, a car has way more power and takes up far more room than a bicycle. However cars have very less mobility to correct themselves or stop themselves, which leads to harder and more frequent impacts. Drivers of vehicles should always look twice before pulling out, paying special attention to the curb where most riders on bicycles are located. It's also very important to always be aware of where bike lanes are on road. It's a safe bet to assume there is usually always a rider in these lanes and they should be avoided by vehicles.

Night driving is often worse for bicyclists because motor vehicle drivers are looking out for other cars headlights which means they're forgetting about looking for smaller blinking bike lights. Bicycle accidents occur more often at night as well because later in the evening there is less traffic which allows for more moving commuters, both motor vehicles and bicycles alike, to move quicker with less stops. As a result, cars might not see a bicycles traveling quickly and change lanes without noticing, causing a serious accident.

The responsibility and safety of bicyclists doesn't rest solely in the hands of a motor vehicle driver, seeing as cyclists should always make themselves visible and follow slow moving traffic laws at all times. However, more often than not it is the fault of the negligent driver that can cause harm to the cyclist.
