Winter Danger for Motorcyclists, How to Avoid Accidents

Winter is here and if you plan on any motorcycle trips over the holidays, you should make sure to be prepared for treacherous road conditions. Riding a motorcycle always involves a higher risk than driving a car, but this is especially true during winter time. Frozen roads, rain, hail, sleet, snow storms, etc. can all cause very dangerous driving circumstances. To stay safe on the road during winter take note of the following precautions that you should take.

Avoid Driving When There is Ice or Snow

Always check the weather forecast before you head out on your motorcycle during winter. Road conditions can rapidly change during winter time. If the weather forecast is predicting ice or snow on the road, please don't go out on your motorcycle unless absolutely necessary. Wait it out until the roads clear up.

Regularly Check Your Tire Pressure

Cold weather lowers tire pressure. Regularly check your tire pressure during winter and make sure they are always inflated at the right pressure.

Dress for the Weather

Riding a motorcycle in winter time can get really cold. If you don't layer well, you might find yourself getting cold, which will result in fatigue and consequently diminish your concentration and ability to quickly react to anything that might happen on the road.

Wear Your Helmet

You should always wear a helmet when driving your motorcycle, but especially in winter, when accidents happen a lot more often, you don't want to get into a crash with your head unprotected.

Stay Attentive to Road Conditions Ahead

Constantly assess the condition of the road ahead of you. Road conditions can change quickly during winter time. You could be driving on dry, grippy asphalt for miles to then suddenly encounter a large patch of ice on the road. If you see dangerous road conditions ahead of you, slow down as much as possible, but do so gently.

Motorcycle accidents often occur as a result of reckless or inattentive driving behavior by a truck or car driver. If you got hurt or lost a loved one in a motorcycle accident, you can sue the negligent driver for compensation. Contact The Kyle Law Firm's personal injuryattorneys to schedule a free consultation.
