How to Drive Safely in the Rain

The Texas Hill Country is no stranger to bad weather this year after experiencing extreme floods and record amounts of rain in the Spring. Could it be that after three months of no rain we have retreated back to drought conditions? It's very true, and very sad. As we enter another rainy season this Fall, it is important to revisit the dangers of severe weather and how we should act accordingly. Below are a few quick tips to help you drive safe in the rain.

  • Keep your distance from cars in front of you. Watch for brake lights and give yourself extra distance than you would in dry conditions to avoid hydroplaning into another vehicle.
  • Avoid using your brakes. Instead, release the accelerator to slow down in order to avoid hydroplaning.
  • Drive in the tracks of the vehicle ahead of you to increase traction.
  • Turn your headlights on to increase your visibility and help other drivers see you.
  • Remember: "Turn around. Don't drown."A famous term used in Texas this Spring encouraged drivers to avoid flooded areas, or any area that looks deeper than usual. Your safety is more important than making it to your destination.
  • Drive slow. Chance of hydroplaning and wrecks increase with speed. Going under the speed limit is not the end of the world, and it could save your life.
  • Avoid driving behind large trucks and 18-wheelers. During a storm, the rain spins off the tires in large sheets of mist that completely block vision. Trucks also produce an extra amount of wind that can easily push small cars.
  • Stay on the highways. Back roads are great for short-cuts, but in extreme weather they are the first to flood, with many low spots.

Being sufficiently prepared for the rainy season may also require you to check your tire tread to avoid hydroplaning and change your windshield wiper blades for optimum use.
