An Austin man, Feliciano Loredo, 56, was killed recently when he was hit by a car while changing his tire. The accident occurred around 8 p.m. at the 1700 block of Deloney Street near East Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
The driver of the car did stop and stayed at the scene of the accident. Loredo died later at the hospital. This is just one of the many pedestrian deaths that have occurred lately in Austin.
In 2011, 17 people were killed in Austin auto-pedestrian accidents, which was higher than in 2010 when 10 pedestrians were killed. To try to prevent deaths, Austin police have issued more than 1,000 citations to drivers for not yielding to pedestrians and 600 citations to pedestrians that didn’t follow laws.
So far in 2012, there have been six pedestrians who died that were trying to cross major highways like I-35. Pedestrians should make sure they cross the highway on bridges where it is safe, said APD Lt. Eli Reyes. There are 128 intersections around Austin that have been deemed dangerous for pedestrians because they have had three or more accidents since 2008.
