The Top 10 Causes of Fatal Distracted Driving

According to a recent analysis by a major car insurance company, more than 10 percent of fatal car crash deaths since 2010 involved distracted driving. Erie Insurance Group worked with the Insurance Institute to analyze nationwide police report data and discover a disturbing pattern: Out of the 65,000 people who were killed in car accidents, a huge number were the victims of distracted driving.

Doug Smith, Erie’s senior vice president, said it best when he said he hoped that “the data will encourage people to avoid these high-risk behaviors that needlessly increase their risk of being involved in a fatal crash.” Truly unnecessary activities like daydreaming and cell phone usage accounted for nearly 75 percent of all distracted driving according to the report. The top 10 distractions involved in fatal automobile accidents were:

  1. Generally distracted or “lost in thought”: 62 percent
  2. Dialing, listening, talking or texting on a cell phone: 12 percent
  3. Distraction by something outside the car (“rubbernecking”): 7 percent
  4. Talking with or looking at other occupants of the car: 5 percent
  5. Using or reaching for an object in the car: 2 percent
  6. Eating or drinking: 2 percent
  7. Adjusting the radio or A/C: 2 percent
  8. Using other devices/controls (such as mirrors or a navigation system): 1 percent
  9. A pet or other moving thing in the vehicle: 1 percent
  10. Smoking, lighting up or ashing a cigarette: 1 percent

If you spend any decent amount of time out on the Texas road, please reconsider your behaviors and stay safe. As the report suggests, even the most innocent-seeming activities can be fatal. Meanwhile, if you’ve been hurt in a car accident that was caused by a distracted driver, don’t think for a second that the law does not protect your rights.
