How to Act When You Get Pulled Over

| Oct 10, 2013 | Uncategorized |

When you get pulled over by the police, there are a few things that you should do that can help you challenge the ticket in court if you are charged with a traffic violation. While being pulled over can be a stressful experience, it is important that you stay calm and polite because anything you do can be used against you later on.

Here are a few tips on how to act when you are pulled over by the police.

Pull Over Quickly but Safely

For your overall safety, always make sure that you are fully concentrated on your driving and the traffic around you. When you see a police car tailing you with its siren on or lights flashing, promptly pull over safely. Make sure you pull over relatively fast, but always in a safe way. Park your car as close to the side as possible.

Act Politely

When you’ve stopped the car, to make the whole process go smoothly, you can already turn off your engine, roll down your window and put your hands on the steering wheel. This will show the officer that you don’t want to cause any trouble. Then just listen to the officer and politely answer his questions. If he asks for your driver’s license and registration, carefully take them out of your wallet or glove compartment.

Talking to the Officer

When talking to the police officer you always want to let him lead the conversation. Don’t get defensive and never admit to committing any offenses. If the officer tells you that you were driving too fast, don’t try to argue about it, just answer in a noncommittal way. Anything you say at this time can work against you later on if you decide to challenge the ticket in court.
