What to do After a Head Injury

| Oct 21, 2013 | Uncategorized |

Head injuries are frightening since they can lead to traumatic brain injuries. A traumaticbrain injury can change your life forever, and many times are caused by the negligence of someone else. It’s important to know what to do if you or a loved one ever experience a head injury, so here are four tips on what to do after a head injury:

  • Recognize the signs of a serious head injury: We all hit our heads every once in awhile, but a head injury that seems innocent, could be a life-threateningbrain injury. If you or a loved one is experiencing any of the following symptoms following a head injury, you should call 911 immediately:
    • Suddenly very sleepy
    • Abnormal behavior
    • Severe headache
    • Unequal pupil sizes
    • Can’t move your arm or leg
    • Losing consciousness
    • Vomiting
  • Check breathing: After calling 911, the first thing to check after a serious head injury is the breathing and circulation of the injured person. If they aren’t breathing, begin CPR immediately. If they are breathing fine, they might have a spinal or neck injury. Don’t move them, and stabilize their head and neck while you wait for medical help.
  • Try to stop the bleeding: If a person is bleeding, place a clean cloth on the wound immediately, but try to avoid moving the head in the process. If blood soaks through the cloth, don’t remove it, just place another clean cloth on top of it.
  • Don’t remove any objects or helmet from the head: If you suspect the person has a head or brain injury, it’s important to not remove any object that might have entered their head or a helmet. Removing any objects on or in the head could make the brain injury even worse.
