Why You Shouldn't Text and Drive

Texting and driving has become a bit of an epidemic in the U.S. Our phones are asking for our attention at all times of the day and even though most people realize that texting behind the wheel is dangerous, many still regularly engage in the activity. Statistics show that half of all teenage drivers admit to regularly texting while driving and another 18% admit to sometimes text and drive. Not only teenagers engage in this dangerous behavior however, with about 40% of people between 20 and 34 admitting to regularly text behind the steering wheel.

Texting is one of the most dangerous activities you can perform while driving. According to the National Safety Counsel's estimation model, a staggering 1.3 million accidents - 25% of all accidents - were caused by driving and texting in 2011. Texting while driving can increase your chances of getting into an accident by 23 times according to this model.

Many U.S. states (41) have already banned texting while driving for all drivers. Texas is lagging behind though, still not having passed a bill to ban texting behind the steering wheel. The city of Austin has instated a texting while driving ban a few years ago.

Whether it is banned by law or not in your state, you don't want to risk your life or someone else's for a text message or an email. We recommend that you put your phone away when you are driving and check your messages once you arrive at your destination. It is not worth the possible consequences that might result from texting while driving.

If you've been in an accident which involved a driver who was texting (or engaged in any other distracting activity), you should contact a skilled attorney to help you get the justice you deserve. Contact The Kyle Law Firm today for a free consultation to discuss your case.
