Legal Tips for Your Texas Bicycle commute

Commuting to work or school/university by bicycle is becoming more popular in the US. Bicycles provide a great way of transportation for covering shorter distances. They're cheap to purchase and don't need expensive gas, they're environmentally friendly, help you avoid traffic jams, and keep you fit. Many bicycle commuters don't really know about the traffic laws regarding biking though.

To help you obey to traffic laws and keep your commute safe we've listed a few important Texas traffic laws you should know about when riding a bicycle.

  • You should ride near the curb and in the direction of traffic. Near the curb doesn't mean you should almost be touching the curb though, keep a safe distance and if staying to the curb in anyway compromises your safety, you have the right to use the full lane.

  • You need to keep at least one hand on your steering wheel at all times.

  • You need to signal using one of your hands when turning.

  • At night you need to have a white light on the front of your bicycle and a red one or a red reflector on the back.

  • Impeding the flow of traffic on the road or the reasonable movement of pedestrians on sidewalks is illegal, so make sure not to stop in the middle of the road or on a busy sidewalk.

Using your bicycle for your daily commute is a great idea. Just make sure to obey to traffic laws and keep it safe. Wearing a helmet and maintaining your bicycle by regularly checking your breaks and tire pressure will help keep you safe.
