Things to remember after a car accident

Understandably, not all of us may be in the right frame of mind after being involved in a car accident. However, arming ourselves with knowledge can do a great deal of help in the long run compared to when we do not have anything at all. Here are some pointers on what you need to remember if you are ever involved in an accident.

STAY AT THE ACCIDENT SCENE

The most basic rule when it comes to vehicular accidents is to not leave the scene until it is deemed appropriate. Leaving the scene of an accident, most especially if the passengers of the other vehicle sustained injuries, could end up with severe criminal penalties as part of being a hit-and-run driver.

However, note that this should not be the case if the accident occurred in a deserted area. Be cautious before coming out of the car, as there have been instances where criminals hit other cars and rob or kill them as the driver/passengers come out. If you ever find yourself in this situation, it is best to drive to the nearest police station and report the accident.

CHECK ON YOUR PASSENGERS

Before looking at the damage done to the car, ensure first that everyone in the car is okay and will not require immediate medical attention. If one of your passengers complains of neck pain, do not move them until a qualified medical professional arrives. However, there might be cases where moving is necessary – especially if the car is likely to explode after the collision. If this happens, move your passengers as steadily and carefully as possible.

CALL FOR HELP

If the accident involves serious property damage and injuries and even death, the police may need to be involved. Request that a police report be filed, and also get the name and the badge numbers of the officers who respond to the scene of the accident.

EXCHANGE INFORMATION

Talk to the other driver/s who is involved in the accident, and obtain their personal details such as name, phone number, address, and their driver’s license numbers. It may also be a good idea to take note of the car’s license plate. Do the same for the passengers. As much as possible, be polite and cordial when talking to them, even if it is their fault.

However, remember that you should not apologize for the accident. Doing so could back you in a corner and leave you with no escape when it comes to legal liability. Take note that the liability in an accident will likely have very little influence when it comes to your insurance company paying for damages.

TALK TO WITNESSES

Look around for potential witnesses and ask about what they saw. Take their personal details as well. Also, some witnesses may refuse to talk, and it is best to leave them be. Forcing your way to get them to talk will be detrimental to your case and purpose later on.

These are some of the essential things to remember if you ever are involved in a car accident. For the best representation of your case, the lawyers of The Kyle Law Firm will be here waiting for you. Call us today.
