Prescription drugs: Often beneficial, sometimes a problem

You may be one of many in Texas and beyond who often ponder the numerous benefits and great inventions we have in the modern world that were not available to those long ago. The development of prescription drugs has brought pain relief and healing for many who suffer infections, illnesses or chronic pain. If you've ever pulled a back muscle, your doctor may have prescribed an opioid to help relax your muscles and help you feel more comfortable while you recovered.

The problem is that many prescription drugs are highly addictive. This can lead to trouble, especially if you or your loved one develop a substance abuse problem. Not only might that wreak havoc on your personal and professional life, it can also land you in a heap of legal trouble in certain circumstances. The more you know about the risks involved in taking prescription drugs, the likelier you are to avoid major problems. If you do face trouble, such as drug charges, it's critical to know where to seek support.

Be aware of the dangers

One of the biggest problems associated with prescription drugs is that many people think it's no big deal to share them with others. Not only is it illegal to do so, it can have dangerous, if not fatal, consequences. The following list includes the most commonly prescribed drugs and possible risks involved with taking them:

  • As mentioned earlier, doctors often prescribe opioids to help alleviate pain. Some of these medications are known to be as strong as heroin or other narcotics often illegally sold on the street.
  • Fentanyl, Hydrocodone and Oxycodone are some of the most commonly prescribed opioid drugs.
  • Central Nervous System Depressants, known as CNS, like Valium or Zoloft, place people at risk for drug addiction. Such drugs may help lessen anxiety or provide relief for those who have trouble sleeping.
  • Stimulants, on the other hand, are high-risk drugs as well. Ritalin and Adderall are two of the most often abused stimulant medications.

Some young adults nowadays reportedly host prescription drug parties where guests dump their assorted pills into a bowl to share with others. This is an example of prescription drug abuse that can be dangerous and lead to serious legal problems.

One of the best things a drug-addicted person can do is reach out for support. Thankfully, in Texas and most other states, there are experienced professionals who can help people overcome their drug habits. There are also support networks in place to assist those who are facing drug-related charges or other legal issues associated with prescription medication or other types of drugs.
