An attorney is an attorney is an attorney, right? They all go to school, they all know what they are doing. Why does the state of Texas make it seem like board certification for different specialties matters?
In Texas, there are more than 100,000 lawyers. That is a lot for you to choose from. How can you narrow it down? How can you know you are getting the best attorney for your needs? Two words -- board certification. Those who are board certified are the best in their field. Currently, less than 10 percent of all attorneys in the state are board-certified in their areas of expertise.

The TBLS assists Texas residents in finding the best attorneys for their needs. To achieve board certification, lawyers have to meet a few general requirements. Some of these requirements are that:
- He or she must be actively practicing law.
- He or she must have a minimum of five years practicing law.
- For at least three of those five years, he or she must have been practicing in Texas.
- He or she must meet minimum case requirements in the field or fields in which he or she is seeking certification.
- He or she must provide references.
- He or she must pass an exam.
- He or she must work to maintain certification.
In other words, there is a lot that goes into achieving board certification. The court does not give it out to just anyone.
Why board certification matters?
Having a board-certified attorney at your side can give you confidence and peace of mind. While board certification does not guarantee that you will get the outcome you desire, it certainly will not hurt your case to have someone with the extra certification fighting for you.
When you turn to an attorney, it is because you have a need to do so. Maybe you have experienced a loss due to the negligence of another person, or maybe your freedom is on the line. Whatever your reason for seeking legal counsel, you want someone with the knowledge and experience necessary to accurately represent you and your interests in court. There are many good attorneys out there, but one who has board certification has that little something extra that sets him or her above the rest.
