What some people are doing while driving may surprise you

Like in other states, distracted driving in Texas is a problem. From phones to the technology that now comes in many vehicles, there are many things that can distract a driver from what he or she needs to be doing most – staying focused on safe driving. In fact, studies and statistics have found that a startlingly high number of people admit to engaging in various types of significantly dangerous distracted driving.

A recent study from polled 1,400 drivers in order to better learn about distracted driving and the things people often do while behind the wheel. Interestingly, the study found that more drivers are willing to admit they engage in distracted driving. This type of behavior is reckless and preventable, and it causes a higher chance of accidents.

What are drivers doing behind the wheel?

When you think of distracted driving, you may think of texting and driving. Texting is likely the most common form of distraction among drivers, but it is far from the only one. According to this survey, the drivers polled admitted to engaging in the following types of distraction and reckless driving:

  • Texting is prominent, with 41 percent of drivers admitting to doing this at times when stuck in traffic. Eleven percent of drivers admit to texting while the car is moving.
  • Social media use is a common type of distracted driving. As many as 18 percent of drivers said they have checked their status while operating a vehicle.
  • Videos, it may surprise you to learn, are a common type of distraction while driving. Eight percent of people say they have watched YouTube or streamed video content while driving.

In addition to the types of distraction and the frequency with which drivers admit to engaging with these types of dangerous behaviors, many also admit to driving after marijuana use. As many as 34 percent of drivers also state they are fine with driving after one drink.

These statistics may startle you, especially if you are a victim of an accident caused by distraction or other types of dangerous behaviors. Ultimately, drivers are responsible for the choices they make while behind the wheel. If you are the victim of an accident caused by a negligent or reckless driver, you have the right to seek compensation through a personal injury claim. If you have questions about your rights, it may be helpful to seek guidance from a personal injury attorney about your legal options.
