What happens when a car crash results in severe burns

At the Kyle Law Firm in Texas, we represent many clients who have suffered a traumatic injury as the result of a car crash. We therefore know that one of the most horrible injuries you can sustain in a car crash is that of severe burns. Unfortunately, your car’s enclosed interior plus the number of things inside it that can catch fire or get hot enough to burn you make for the perfect storm to put you at risk for receiving severe or even fatal burns if your accident proves to be a fiery one.

Not all burns result in death of course. However, even if you survive your crash, the burns you receive likely will forever change your life. Not only can burns be extremely painful, but they usually require a long recovery period and they often leave disfiguring scars.

Burn types

The American Burn Association reports that you can receive the following four different types of burns in a car crash:

  1. Scald burns from your car’s hot liquids, including gasoline and any hot beverages you happen to have in your car at the time of your crash
  2. Thermal burns from both the flames themselves and the surfaces of your car that become exceptionally hot during and after a fiery crash
  3. Chemical burns from your car’s caustic fluids, including antifreeze, transmission fluid, steering fluid, etc.
  4. Electrical burns from your car’s live wires and/or from any downed power lines that you might come into contact with

Burn degrees

While burns get classified into four different categories ranging from first-degree to fourth-degree, car crash victims almost invariably receive third- or fourth-degree burns, the most serious kinds. If you sustain a third-degree burn, it will not only singe your skin, but also invade your underlying nerves, muscles, tendons and tissues. A fourth-degree burn is even more serious in that it burns your body all the way into your bones. Such burns are truly life-threatening and require immediate emergency medical intervention.
