Avoid these costly mistakes after a wreck

Whether tourist season is still going strong or things have died down for the winter, there is still plenty of traffic on Loop 337, Interstate 35 and in and around New Braunfels. The more traffic there is, the more at risk you are of becoming involved in a car accident. You probably already know what to do after a car accident, such as not leaving the scene and calling the police, but are you familiar with the mistakes you should avoid?

Even a seemingly minor mistake in the wake of a car wreck can cost you. In some cases, the insurer might flat out deny your claim due to an action you did or did not take after a motor vehicle collision. Here are some of the more common mistakes you should avoid after a wreck.

Not collecting evidence

In the first few moments after a car wreck, things can be pretty chaotic. However, unless you are being hustled into the back of an ambulance, take a few moments to collect evidence. This can include taking pictures of your car, the other driver's car and the accident scene in general. Also, talk to any witnesses and get their contact information in case you need their statements to back your claim.

Letting the other driver go

If you are in a seemingly minor fender bender, you might be tempted to simply exchange insurance and contact information with the other driver. This can come back to haunt you especially if the other driver tells their insurance that the wreck was your fault. You could end up in a he-said-she-said situation where the insurer completely denies your claim.

Making assumptions about your policy

When you first purchased your insurance policy, you probably made sure it had the coverage you were looking for and met the requirements in Texas. Unfortunately, not being familiar with the fine print could cost you if you are in a wreck.

Settling fast

After a wreck, you might be tempted to take a settlement as quickly as possible so that you can get your car fixed and get back to your life. However, accepting the first settlement offered might cost you in the long run, especially if your injuries require further treatment.

Apologizing and admitting fault

After a wreck, never apologize and never admit fault. People often do this simply to make the other driver feel better, but the insurance company can use these kinds of statements against you. Apologizing or admitting fault can definitely have a negative impact on your claim.

Ignoring injuries

One of the worst things you can do after a car accident is to ignore or brush off your injuries. While you may not feel like you suffered any serious damage within the first few hours or days after the car crash, this does not mean you are in the clear. You could have soft tissue damage, whiplash or internal injuries that might take a bit of time to manifest and become obvious. Even if you do not think you are injured, you should still seek a medical opinion.

If you have been the victim of a car accident due to the actions of a negligent or reckless driver, avoid the above mistakes. Making the wrong move could seriously cost you when it comes time to file a claim for your injuries and the damage to your car.
