3 tips for avoiding a tractor-trailer crash on the highway

There are many factors that play a role in getting into an accident, but it's still the reality that there are ways to avoid accidents. It is particularly important to know how to avoid collisions if you are driving around tractor-trailers, because these commercial vehicles are much larger than cars and can cause serious, potentially fatal, collisions.

On average, these vehicles are around 8 feet wide and 13 feet tall. They can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds, which would easily crush a smaller vehicle. The average midsize car weighs only around 3,500 pounds.

With such huge weight differences, it's easy to see why a crash with a semi or tractor-trailer would be a problem. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid a collision. Here are three helpful tips to keep you safe on the roads when you're traveling around semitrucks.

1. Give the truck a large berth

To start with, it's a great idea to slow down and give the truck that is in front of you or beside you more room. The reality is that these vehicles often take up the majority of their lanes and may need more room to turn. If you're nearby and have the ability to give the driver more space, doing so can help prevent a crash.

2. Stay out of blind spots

Another important tip is to stay out of blind spots. Blind spots are areas around the sides, back and front of the vehicle where the driver may not see you. Remember, if you're unable to see the driver's mirrors, they definitely can't see you.

3. Give warning when making moves

A final tip is to make sure you give drivers plenty of warning when you intend to change lanes, merge or slow down. It isn't always easy to know when you have to stop, and you may have to make quick movements to avoid other hazards, but it's important to give the truck drivers around you as much warning as you can. This gives them more time to react and lowers the likelihood of a collision.

With these tips, you'll significantly lower your risk of getting into a crash. If you do get into a crash because a driver was not paying attention or was following you too closely, then you will know that you did all you could to prevent a crash and can move forward with filing a claim.
