Why do construction workers suffer so many brain injuries?

Construction work is a notoriously dangerous occupation. So many of your jobs require you to work on roofs, scaffolding or tall ladders that you face substantial continuing risk of falling. In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration lists falls as the number one cause of construction worker deaths.

Even if you survive your fall, it could result in your sustaining a traumatic brain injury. The Mayo Clinic explains that a TBI results from your head hitting or getting hit by a hard object with such force that your brain “sloshes around” in your skull because your head violently moves back and forth.

Varied symptoms

You may or may not exhibit symptoms such as the following immediately after suffering a TBI:

  • Unconsciousness
  • Double vision
  • Tinnitis
  • Dizziness
  • Speech difficulties
  • Cognitive difficulties

Even if you experience none of the above, do not assume that you have not sustained a TBI. Your symptoms may fail to appear until several weeks after your accident. All head injuries require immediate assessment by a head trauma specialist. If (s)he determines that you in fact suffered a TBI, you need immediate treatment to minimize its effects.

TBI consequences

A serious TBI can make it impossible for you to work for a substantial period of time, perhaps for the rest of your life. It can also negatively impact your family and social relationships since you may well become easily angered, stressed, depressed, etc. In addition, your medical and rehabilitation costs likely will skyrocket at precisely the time when you cannot earn a living. In a worst-case scenario, a TBI could render you incapable of taking care of your daily needs, thereby requiring constant in-home care.
