As many as one out of 10 nursing home residents suffer from bedsores, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In many cases, they are the result of caretaker neglect. That is, the very individuals charged with caring for nursing home residents fail to do so adequately. Injury arises, and in some cases prove fatal.
At Kyle Law Firm, we can help you and your family rectify the situation. Our lawyers have more than 60 years of combined experience, and understand the dangers posed by nursing homes and the vulnerability of their residents. We work hard to protect the rights and ensure the safety of the elder community, and pursue restitution and justice when their health is needlessly jeopardized.
THE CAUSES OF BEDSORES
Bedsores, also known as pressure sores or decubitus ulcers, are caused when constant pressure is applied to the same area of the body. If left untreated, they can become infected and lead to life-threatening conditions. This is why it’s important for nursing home staff to help residents change positions regularly, as a means of relieving contact pressure. Indeed, the failure to do so can be classified as malpractice.
The most common areas for bedsores are the lower back, buttocks, hips, calves and ankles. Not surprisingly, these are the parts of the body that elderly individuals have the most trouble moving on their own.
At first, bedsore may appear to be a simple rash or discoloration. But it does not take long for the skin to deteriorate, and for the patient’s health to be seriously at risk. While some nursing home residents may call attention to their conditions, others — such as individuals with mental impairments — are unable to demand adequate care. This is why it’s crucial for family members to be careful in their selection of facilities, and to check in often on relatives’ well-being.
